Cake Inspiration

11 09 2009

I had a friend over for dinner the other night, and whilst she was here she was asking me about cake decorating. She’s doing cup cakes for her sister’s baby shower and we were looking through my cake decorating book collection.

It’s quite a collection really, and the most exciting part is that I don’t think I have bought any of the books at full price. I’m a cheapskate like that! In fact, my cake decorating book collection is about as big as my fiction collection and about as big as my other non-fiction book collection.

It was nice to pull them all out and browse through, imagining all the things that could be made!  I’ll wait and see what my friend decides to make, but no doubt for a baby shower, it will be both sweet (literally and figuratively) and cute!

Baby converse!

One of my friends who came to the original ‘Cake Decorating Day’ has since used the skills she learnt to make a couple of cakes for friends. She is currently making a cake for a friends baby shower and I went over the other day to help her make some of the decorations.

The request for the cake was to have decorations such as a bottle, footprints, booties and a dummy.  We managed to find a pattern for some little baby Mary-Janes that we used, and I made up a pattern for the baby converse from a picture we found.  They turned out pretty well, don’t you think?  My decorations were the pink ones, and my friends were the multi coloured ones.

Cake decorating day

24 07 2009

A few months ago, I had some friends over for ‘Cake Decorating Day’.  The three friends that came are also fairly crafty people, but none of them had tried cake decorating before.  The idea was to get them over for a day during our holidays and teach them the basics of cake decorating. I wanted them to be able to walk away from the day with a couple of flowers and a finished cake.

We made cakes, but we also made a mess!

The day was really enjoyable. We ate lots, gossiped, made a mess and had a great time.  The agenda for the day was to make a rose, a lilly and to cover a cake. We did the flowers first so they could dry a little before we coloured them.

My friends didn’t like frilling the petals of the roses much, they found it quite difficult! However you can see from the picture that the least-frilled petals just create a different look for the flower; they don’t necessarily look ‘bad’.

The flowers were great to make – a few fairly simply shapes and some wire, but when they are coloured and put together they look quite impressive!

I’d had a few things ready for everyone on the day too. I had made some rose cones, so we could attach our petals to it when it was dried, and I had the cakes all made so that all we had to do was cover them. I’d bough the cake boards and icing and equipment too.

The cakes I’d made just in a small tuna tin (washed out, of course), which was a perfect size for to learn to cover. Not too big, so it wasn’t too difficult and didn’t use lots of icing, but not too small that it was too fiddly either.

My friends cakes... I was so proud of them!

The finished cakes my friends produced were really impressive! There were a few tears in the icing and a few lumps and bumps but for a days crash course they managed to pull off some great looking cakes!

I was really touched the following week too when my friends gave me a gift voucher for a beauty treatment as a thank you too! I got all my payment though by seeing them have a great day and accomplish something new!
